Exam Preparation Overview
Everything you need to know about your practice exam at a glance.
Professional Cloud Developer at a glance
The Google Cloud Professional Cloud Developer exam is for people who build and configure scalable, secure applications using Google-recommended tools and best practices. It covers the whole lifecycle: designing cloud-native applications, building and testing them, deploying them, and connecting them to Google Cloud services. Google's description also includes using generative AI APIs and AI coding assistants.
Questions are multiple choice and multiple select. You can sit the exam online with a proctor or at a test centre, and there are no prerequisites. Google does not publish percentage weights for the sections. Fees and rules can change, so confirm them on Google's page.
Technical Concepts Explained
The exam guide has five sections. These ideas run through all of them.
IaaS, CaaS, PaaS and FaaS
Virtual machines, containers, managed platforms and functions scale at different speeds and need different amounts of management. You must pick the right one for each workload.
Loose coupling with messaging
Services talk through Pub/Sub or Eventarc instead of calling each other directly, so a slow service does not break the rest.
REST versus gRPC
REST is simple and widely supported. gRPC is faster and compact, and suits service-to-service calls.
Observability
Good code produces metrics, logs and traces, so you can see how it behaves and find faults quickly.
Least privilege
Each service gets only the access it needs, using IAM roles, service accounts and Workload Identity.
Application authentication
Apps prove who they are with application default credentials, JWTs or OAuth 2.0, not with keys stored in code.
Strong and eventual consistency
Some databases always return the latest data, while others may lag briefly. Your data choice depends on which one the app can tolerate.
Fault tolerance
Apps retry failed calls with exponential backoff and shut down gracefully when the platform stops them.
Safe rollouts
Feature flags, A/B tests and backward-compatible changes let you release new features without breaking users.
Autoscaling
Workloads grow and shrink with demand, using metrics and alerts to decide when to scale.
Key Technologies and Tools
These products appear in Google's exam guide, grouped by what they do.
Exam Difficulty Level
This is a professional-level exam. It tests your judgement about Google Cloud services, and Google recommends solid experience before you sit it.
of industry experience recommended, including at least 1 year on Google Cloud.
per question on average: 2 hours for 50 to 60 questions.
exam sections, from design and testing to deployment and troubleshooting.
What makes it hard
- Wide coverage across five sections and many products.
- Scenario questions where several options work and one fits best.
- Trade-offs between serverless, GKE and other choices.
- Security and troubleshooting details.
What helps
- Google says the exam does not directly assess coding skill.
- If you know one general-purpose language, you can read the code snippets.
- Hands-on practice makes the scenarios feel familiar.
Exam Preparation Tips
- Use the exam guide as a checklist. It lists every topic by section, so tick them off as you learn.
- Build real things. Use the Google Cloud Free Tier to deploy to Cloud Run and GKE yourself.
- Follow Google's learning path. The Professional Cloud Developer path and skill badges are on Google Cloud Skills Boost.
- Try the official sample questions. They show the style before you commit to a plan.
- Master the compute decision. Know when to choose Cloud Run, Cloud Functions, App Engine or GKE.
- Learn the security basics. Practise service accounts, application default credentials, Secret Manager and Workload Identity.
- Know each troubleshooting tool. Be clear what Logging, Monitoring, Trace, Profiler and Error Reporting each do.
- Watch product names. Google updated the exam for branding changes, so check the names used in the guide.
Common Preparation Mistakes
Memorising product lists.
Learn when and why to pick one service over another.
Treating it as a coding test.
Focus on services and best practices, since the exam does not directly assess coding.
Skipping security topics.
Practise authentication, service accounts, secrets and least privilege.
Ignoring operations.
Study autoscaling, logging, monitoring and troubleshooting in Section 5.
Studying with outdated product names.
Check the names in the current exam guide before you revise.
Reading without hands-on practice.
Deploy small apps so the scenarios match something you have done.
