Exam Preparation Overview
Everything you need to know about your practice exam at a glance.
ECBA Exam
The ECBA tests job-ready, foundation-level business analysis. IIBA builds the exam from The Business Analysis Standard and the BABOK Guide, split across nine domains.
Domains 1–3 come from The Business Analysis Standard (40%). Domains 4–9 apply the six BACCM concepts through the BABOK Guide (60%). Source: IIBA ECBA Exam Blueprint V1.1.
Where the ECBA Takes You
The ECBA is the first rung of IIBA's certification pathway. It shows employers you understand the language, mindset and core techniques of business analysis, even before you have years of project experience.
ECBA
Foundation-level credential for people entering the field.
- No prior BA experience needed to sit the exam
- Proves you know BACCM, techniques and BA mindset
CCBA
Capability-level certification once you have real project work behind you.
- Builds on foundation knowledge
- Requires documented work experience
CBAP
IIBA's professional-level certification for experienced analysts.
- Recognises extensive practice
- Opens senior and lead-analyst conversations
Business analysis is practised under many job titles. The ECBA gives you a shared vocabulary that transfers between them, which helps when moving from operations, support, QA or project coordination into an analyst role.
Study Smarter, Not Longer
The ECBA rewards people who can apply ideas to a scenario. These habits fit how the exam is built.
Weight your time by domain. Understanding Business Analysis (20%) and Mindset (14%) together are a third of the exam, so master them first.
Make BACCM your anchor. Change, Need, Solution, Stakeholder, Value and Context cover 60% of questions. Practise explaining each in your own words.
Use both official sources. Read The Business Analysis Standard for domains 1–3 and the BABOK Guide for domains 4–9.
Learn the 20 listed techniques. For each one, know its purpose, how it works and when it is a good or poor fit.
Read scenarios slowly. Identify who the stakeholder is, what stage the work is at and what the question really asks before looking at options.
Rehearse the clock. 75 minutes for 50 questions leaves about 90 seconds each. Flag hard ones and return to them.
Avoid These Study Traps
Most missed questions come from a handful of avoidable habits.
Studying from older BABOK v3 knowledge-area material only.
Follow the current nine-domain blueprint and the Standard, which replaced the old structure.
Memorising definitions without applying them.
Practise situation-based questions and explain why each wrong option fails.
Skipping the lighter domains, such as Implementing BA (6%).
Give every domain at least one review pass. Small domains still decide close results.
Treating the 20 techniques as a list to recall.
Match each technique to a situation, such as root cause analysis for a recurring problem.
Ignoring the mindset and competency content.
Review the 29 underlying competencies, including ethics, listening, facilitation and systems thinking.
The Ideas Behind the Questions
Three building blocks appear throughout the exam: the six BACCM concepts, the requirements-versus-design distinction, and the assessed techniques.
Change
The act of transformation in response to a need.
Need
A problem or opportunity to be addressed.
Solution
A specific way of satisfying one or more needs in a context.
Stakeholder
A group or individual with a relationship to the change, the need or the solution.
Value
The worth, importance or usefulness of something to a stakeholder in a context.
Context
The circumstances that influence, are influenced by, and give understanding to the change.
Requirements vs. designs
Requirements describe what a stakeholder needs, while designs describe how a solution could meet that need. Both evolve through an initiative, and the exam checks that you can tell them apart in a scenario.
Choosing an approach
Business analysis can be done in predictive, adaptive or hybrid ways. The right choice depends on the situation, such as how stable the needs are and how the organisation works.
