Key ideas

Technical Concepts Explained

These ten ideas come up across all three domains.

Risk appetite and tolerance
How much AI risk the organisation will accept. Each AI use case is judged against it.
AI life cycle
Design or procurement, training, testing, implementation, maintenance and decommissioning. Each stage has its own risks.
Model drift
A model's results change over time as data and conditions change, so it needs monitoring.
Bias and trustworthiness
Unfair or unreliable outputs, linked to ethics, privacy, safety and ESG impacts.
AI risk scenarios
Realistic cases of threats, vulnerabilities and attacks on AI systems, used to rate likelihood and impact.
Risk treatment
The choice to reduce, transfer, avoid or accept an AI risk once it is assessed.
Controls management
Evaluating, selecting and validating controls so risk stays within tolerance.
Risk metrics and reporting
Measures that show whether AI risk is rising, reported to the board, management and operations.
Supply chain and third-party risk
Risks from vendors, models and data sources, including contract terms on data use and intellectual property.
Human oversight
Checks at critical decision points where people can review, question or override AI.
Why it matters

Certification Benefits

Globally recognised

ISACA describes AAIR as globally accepted and recognised.

Career credibility

It gives you the credibility to move ahead in a risk career.

Builds on your risk skills

It showcases your existing risk expertise and prepares you for AI challenges.

Value for employers

It shows employers you can add immediate and lasting value to the enterprise.

Demand

Industry Demand and Market Value

Organisations are adopting AI faster than their risk teams can keep up, so people who can rate and manage AI risk are becoming valuable. ISACA's own AAIR page backs this up with two figures from the AI Risk Repository:

51%

of IT professionals say AI systems are the biggest risk.

34%

say the greater risk still lies with humans.

AAIR is a new credential launched in 2026, so there is little reliable salary data for it yet. Its value is highest for people already working in risk, governance and compliance.

What you can prove

Skills Validated by the Certification

  • Domain 2Evaluate risk in AI models, including design, algorithms, training and drift.

  • Domain 3Add AI risk to incident response, BIA, business continuity and disaster recovery.
  • Domain 3Report AI risk metrics to the board and management, and use AI to support the risk program.

If you do not qualify yet

Your path

Career Growth and Progression

  1. Build risk foundations

Start with IT risk basics, for example ISACA's IT Risk Fundamentals certificate.

  2. Earn a qualifying designation

CRISC is the most natural fit for risk professionals, or another listed designation.

  3. Earn AAIR

Add AI-specific risk skills to your risk expertise.

  4. Widen or lead

Look at ISACA's related AI credentials for security, audit and governance, or move into senior risk leadership.

Exam Preparation Tips

  1. Use the outline as a checklist. ISACA lists 23 skills tested, so tick each one off as you learn it.
  2. Study by weight. Give the most time to Domain 3 (42%), then Domain 1 (37%) and Domain 2 (21%).
  3. Think like a risk adviser. Questions are scenario-based, so choose the best risk response, not just a correct definition.
  4. Practise your pace. You have about 100 seconds per question, so rehearse 90 questions in 150 minutes.
  5. Link ideas to your own work. Relate AI risks to your risk register, controls and reporting.
  6. Try ISACA's free quiz early. It shows the style before you commit to a study plan.
  7. Register early. You can book a test slot 48 hours after payment, up to 90 days ahead, and you have six months to sit the exam.

Treating all domains equallyDomain 3 alone is 42% of the exam.Spend the most time on scenarios, treatment, controls, metrics, supply chain and incidents.
Learning AI theory without riskQuestions ask for the best risk response.Link every AI concept to its risk, control and report.
Skipping life cycle topicsDomain 2 covers procurement, testing, drift and decommissioning.Learn the risks at each stage, from design to retirement.
Ignoring governance, law and ethicsDomain 1 is 37% of the exam.Review accountability, policies, regulation, bias and ESG.
Not practising scenariosJudgement questions are slower than recall questions.Take timed practice at about 100 seconds per question.
Leaving eligibility to the endYou need an active designation and a test slot, and some regions are test-centre only.Check your designation and PSI test centre before you register.
