Exam Overview

What the CISM Exam Measures

CISM (Certified Information Security Manager) is ISACA's management-focused credential for professionals who govern, design and run an enterprise's information security program. It is aimed at people who lead security, not only people who configure it.

The exam tests four areas: Information Security Governance, Information Security Risk Management, Information Security Program, and Incident Management.

Question count, duration and scoring reflect ISACA's standard exam format and may change. Confirm current details on ISACA's official page before you register.

Situations a CISM Handles

Each case shows the kind of decision the exam expects you to make.

CASE 1

The board asks about cyber risk

Situation: Leadership wants to know whether the company is safe.

Your move: Translate technical risk into business impact and report in terms the board can act on.

CASE 2

A security program needs a roadmap

Situation: Controls exist, but there is no clear plan or budget.

Your move: Define strategy, set priorities and resources, and choose metrics to show progress.

CASE 3

A breach has just been detected

Situation: Systems are affected and people are asking what to do.

Your move: Follow the incident response plan, contain the issue, communicate clearly and run a review afterwards.

CASE 4

A vendor will handle sensitive data

Situation: The business wants to move quickly with a new supplier.

Your move: Assess third-party risk, set requirements in the contract and agree how it will be monitored.
