Exam Preparation Overview
Everything you need to know about your practice exam at a glance.
What the Okta Administrator Exam Actually Tests
Okta describes certified administrators as people who are technically proficient at managing the Okta service. The exam checks whether you can handle real admin work, not just recall product names.
Format and rules at a glance
Subject areas covered
Identity and Access Management
AD and LDAP agents, delegated authentication, SAML, SWA, Desktop SSO and provisioning to OIN apps.

Smarter Ways to Prepare
These tips come from how the exam is built, so they apply whichever resources you use.
Treat the official topic list as your checklist
Okta states that every topic in its subject areas table relates to at least one exam question. Tick each one off before booking.
Practise the DOMC format early
Seeing one option at a time and committing to YES or NO feels different from normal multiple choice. Get used to it before exam day.
Build things in a real Okta org
Create a profile mapping, add an app through the Integration Wizard, write a sign-on policy. Okta notes some topics are best learned through hands-on use.
Use Okta's own learning material
The Okta Help Center, Content Library and the Okta Essentials course map closely to the exam topics.
Learn the why, not only the how
Many topics are phrased as "demonstrate knowledge of why", such as why Okta and AD password policies should match. Be ready to explain reasoning.
Plan the exam logistics
It is proctored online, so test your camera, connection and room setup the day before and book at least 24 hours ahead.
What Holds Candidates Back, and the Fix
Most failed attempts come from a few repeating habits. Spot them early and correct them.
Mistake
Reading about features without ever configuring them.
Fix
Spend time in an Okta org. Configure agents, mappings, policies and groups yourself.
Mistake
Skipping Monitoring and API topics because they seem small.
Fix
Learn log reading, API token permissions, rate limiting and service accounts. They are listed as exam topics.
Mistake
Memorising answers instead of understanding them.
Fix
Read each explanation and be able to say why the other options are wrong. DOMC shows you only some options.
Mistake
Mixing up Okta-sourced and AD-sourced user behaviour.
Fix
Make a short comparison of password policy, self-service reset and activation rules for each source.
Mistake
Relying on unapproved material such as exam dumps.
Fix
Okta warns that dumps can lead to invalidated scores, revoked certification and testing bans. Stick to approved resources and understand the concepts.
Key Okta Concepts in Plain Language
Tap a topic to expand it. These are the ideas that appear again and again across the exam subject areas.
Active Directory and LDAP agents
Okta installs a lightweight agent next to your directory. It imports users and groups and can pass sign-in requests back to AD or LDAP, which is called delegated authentication.
Expect questions on agent architecture, the service account and permissions it needs (especially for password reset), and high availability with more than one agent.
SAML assertions and SSO
In SAML, Okta acts as the identity provider and signs an assertion telling the app who the user is. The app trusts that assertion instead of asking for a password.
Know how the Application Integration Wizard builds a SAML app, when to use a template app, and how SWA plug-in apps differ from SAML apps.
Universal Directory and profile mappings
Universal Directory stores the Okta user profile. Mappings decide which attribute flows from a source (AD, HR system, Okta) to each app, and in which direction.
Learn custom attributes, profile sourcing, attribute-level sourcing and write-back to directories and apps.
Okta Expression Language
A small expression syntax that transforms data while mapping attributes or building a username. For example, String.substringBefore(user.email, "@") returns the part of an email before the @ sign.
Be comfortable reading an expression and predicting its output.
Lifecycle management and group push
Lifecycle management covers onboarding, updates and deprovisioning of users across connected apps. Group push sends Okta groups and their membership to supported apps.
Review the typical user flow, HR as a source, and how group rules automate membership.
Sign-on policies and adaptive MFA
Policies decide when a user must prove who they are. Sign-on rules can vary by network zone, device or risk, and app-level rules can add further MFA.
Know the different security postures of MFA factors and how Okta can support legacy MFA solutions.
Password policies and self-service reset
Okta-sourced users follow Okta password policy, while AD-sourced users are also bound by AD. Okta's policy should match or exceed the AD policy, and you may need several policies for different groups.
Review the password sync agent and self-service reset behaviour for each user source.
Admin roles and access control
Admin roles give people only the administrative permissions they need. Understanding the built-in roles helps you apply least privilege in a scenario question.
System logs and troubleshooting
Okta logs record sign-ins, policy decisions, provisioning events and admin actions. You are expected to read a log entry and work out what happened.
Also review the logging and troubleshooting options for each Okta agent and plug-in.
